What We Look For in Applicants

Understand the qualities and characteristics that make a strong FORGE candidate.

By FORGE TeamUpdated January 2024

Core Qualities

While each program has specific requirements, certain qualities are universal to all FORGE applicants:

**Drive** - We look for people who take initiative. You don't wait for permission; you make things happen.

**Curiosity** - Great candidates ask questions, seek to understand, and never stop learning.

**Resilience** - Building anything worthwhile is hard. We need people who push through challenges.

**Integrity** - Honesty and ethical behavior are non-negotiable. We trust our community members.

**Community Mindset** - FORGE is about lifting each other up. Selfish individuals don't thrive here.

For Forge Labs (Teens)

Teen applicants should demonstrate:

• A clear problem they want to solve • Evidence of having already started (research, prototypes, conversations) • Coachability - willingness to learn and adapt • Time commitment to participate fully • Parental/guardian support

**We don't expect:** - A perfect business plan - Technical skills - Previous business experience - Funding or revenue

Pro Tips

  • Show your work - what have you already done?
  • Be specific about your idea and target users
  • Explain why YOU are the right person to build this

For Volunteers

We look for volunteers who:

• Have relevant skills (development, design, marketing, business, etc.) • Can commit consistent hours (minimum 3-5 hours/week) • Communicate proactively • Work well independently and in teams • Are genuinely passionate about African youth empowerment

**Experience level varies** - We have roles for beginners and experts alike. What matters is your commitment and attitude.

For Schools

Schools should be able to:

• Provide accurate information about the institution • Designate a point of contact who responds promptly • Supply photos and content for the website • Commit to keeping the website information updated

**We prioritize:** - Schools with no existing website - Schools in underserved areas - Schools demonstrating clear need and impact

Red Flags

Things that hurt your application:

• **Generic answers** - Copy-pasted or vague responses • **Dishonesty** - Any false information is an automatic rejection • **Entitlement** - Expecting acceptance without demonstrating value • **Poor communication** - Not responding to follow-ups • **Inconsistency** - Answers that contradict each other • **Spam applications** - Submitting multiple times without meaningful updates

Warning

We cross-reference applications and verify information. Dishonesty will result in a permanent ban.
